What is a Heat Illness Prevention Plan?

A heat illness prevention plan is a written document that outlines how an employer will protect workers from exposure to extreme heat. The plan should address the specific hazards of the job, as well as the employer’s policies and procedures for preventing and responding to heat-related illness. Employees should be trained on the contents of the plan, and it should be reviewed regularly to ensure that it is up to date.

In today’s episode of the OSHA Oops! Podcast, safety experts Michael and Rick are discussing a company that did not provide their employees with a heat illness prevention plan. They were subsequently fined $750.

The Importance of a Heat Illness Prevention Plan

Heat illness is a serious threat to workers in many industries, particularly those who work outdoors or in hot environments. Heat illnesses can range from heat cramps and heat exhaustion to more severe conditions like heat stroke, which can be fatal. As a result, it’s essential for employers to have a heat illness prevention plan in place. This plan should include measures to help workers stay cool and hydrated, as well as procedures for responding to heat-related emergencies. By taking steps to prevent heat illness, employers can keep their workers safe and productive.
